Before They Were Gamecocks: South Carolina's Coaching Staff

By Rixon Lane

The South Carolina coaching staff led the Gamecocks to a No. 4 national ranking and a third consecutive 11-2 season in 2013, and not a single coach left during the offseason.

With the full staff back for 2014, we took a look at how the Gamecock coaches fared when they faced South Carolina, both as coaches and players.

Overall, nine different South Carolina coaches went up against their current school on the field or on the sidelines, posting a 26-9-2 record. Here's how they did individually:

Steve Spurrier

Florida Player (1964): 1-0

Duke Assistant Coach (1980-82): 1-2

Duke Head Coach (1989): 0-1

Florida Head Coach (1992-2001): 10-0

Overall: 12-3

Spurrier beat South Carolina 37-0 in his second collegiate start. The Gamecocks returned the favor in 1989, beating his Duke Blue Devils 27-21, the only season opener Spurrier has ever lost as a head coach. He then proceeded to go to Florida and torment South Carolina, as well as the rest of the SEC, for over a decade.

Steve Spurrier Jr.

Duke Player (1990-91): 0-1-1

Florida Assistant Coach (1994-98): 5-0

Overall: 5-1-1

Junior couldn't beat the Gamecocks as a player, but had little trouble with them as a Gator assistant with his father.

Kirk Botkin

Arkansas Player (1992-93): 2-0

Arkansas Assistant Coach (2008-09): 1-1

Overall: 3-1

Staff photo by Paul Collins: Botkin beat the Gamecocks twice during his all-conference years at Arkansas.

Botkin was an All-SEC tight end for the Razorbacks in 1992 and 1993. His junior and senior seasons both featured wins over the Gamecocks. He went 1-1 against South Carolina as an Arkansas assistant in Bobby Petrino's first two years with the program.

G.A. Mangus

Florida Graduate Assistant (1992-94): 3-0

Middle Tennessee State Assistant Coach (2006): 0-1

Overall: 3-1

Mangus rode the wave of Florida domination in the early nineties, with his only loss to South Carolina coming in the 52-7 blowout of Middle Tennessee State.

Joe Robinson

Louisiana Tech Assistant Coach (1991): 0-0-1

LSU Assistant Coach (2008): 1-0

Overall: 1-0-1

Robinson's Bulldogs fought to a 12-12 tie with the Gamecocks in 1991. He was with LSU for the infamous "Stephen Garcia tackled by a referee" game.

Lorenzo Ward

Alabama Grad Assistant (1993): 1-0

Arkansas Assistant Coach (2008): 0-1

Overall: 1-1

Staff photo by Paul Collins: Ward had little experience with the Gamecocks before arriving in Columbia.

Alabama had to forfeit eight wins in 1993, so technically, South Carolina didn't lose to Ward and the Crimson Tide 17-6 in 1993. However, the Gamecocks got their revenge in the 2008 win over Arkansas.

Everette Sands

The Citadel Player (1990): 1-0

Overall 1-0

The only time that Sands faced South Carolina, the Gamecocks suffered one of their most humiliating losses. The Bulldogs beat South Carolina 38-35 in Columbia, scoring 10 points in the final three minutes and three seconds.

Deke Adams

Southern Miss Assistant Coach (2010): 0-1

Overall: 0-1

Staff photo by Chris Gillespie: Adams is one of two coaches with only game of experience against South Carolina.

Adams and his defensive line were the first to experience what Marcus Lattimore could do on a college football field.

Grady Brown

Southern Miss Assistant Coach (2010): 0-1

Overall: 0-1

Staff Photo by Paul Collins: Brown only coached one game against South Carolina.

Brown's cornerbacks gave up 225 yards through the air against the Gamecocks.
